Kelly Treleaven

Dear Parents and SBAI community,

I'm so excited to be returning to SBAI for a fifth year and for my tenth year of teaching overall. I teach 7th grade English/Language Arts, 8th grade English/Language Arts, Literary Genres, and English I at our secondary campus.

I received my Bachelor's in English at the University of Texas at Austin and my Master's in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. I was inspired to teach after studying abroad at Oxford my sophomore year, where I discovered the value of personalized learning, in-depth feedback, and what my education could look like when I actually had agency in it. My teaching philosophy is to not only make sure that my students can perform at a competitive level, but to cultivate in each student a love of reading and self-expression through writing. In a world that increasingly relies on communication and technology, it's critical that our highly-gifted children:

  • know their voice and are able to communicate it clearly
  • are exposed to a wide range of  stories, especially those different from their own
  • can evaluate the writing of others for reliability, and,
  • use all of the above to build us a better world

When I'm not teaching, I love reading, drinking iced coffee, and playing with my dog, Boots, who is a very good boy:

Feel free to check out the link to my blog for updates on homework and deadlines. Students have access to my Itslearning page for any copies of handouts, links, rubrics, and other resources.

I'm so excited for the 2019-20 school year. Let's get to work!
