My name is Loren Gardner.  This is my 26th year teaching.  I started teaching high school but have been teaching and coaching at the middle school level for the past 21 years.  I graduated from Stephen F. Austin with a BA in Art Education.  I believe that creativity and problem solving is one of the most valuable attributes in today's society.  The arts provide countless opportunities for individuals to develop those skills as they work through different processes.

“Creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.”
― Ken Robinson

I also coach swimming and water polo.  I have been coaching wrestling since 1990 and have coached swimming exclusively for the past 7 years.  I love swimming and I continue to swim to this day.  I have competed in masters meets and placed first in 50 and 100 breast as well as 50 free in my age division.

Art 1

What to expect: Students will learn about a wide variety of art techniques, materials, and historic artists and movements. Students will learn to use many materials and create finished works of art, as well as participate in extracurricular contests and events.

Things to know: Due to the breadth of materials used in this class, students are expected to pay an Art Fee of $10 to cover costs and replenish individual and class supplies. Students are also expected to behave in a respectful and considerate manner to foster a creative and safe environment for everyone.

Important note: Please be aware that this class will require a substantial time commitment to be successful. Students MUST use ALL the class time available to them and occasionally will need to attend tutorials in order to finish projects/assignments.

Ceramics

What to expect: We will explore clay as a viable art medium.  We will create works of art using the various ceramic techniques.  You will come to understand the health and safety issues related to clay and finally, we will explore the history of ceramics.

Things to know:  Clay and glazes are costly. The class will have a 10.00 fee associated with participating in the class.  If you are unable to pay the fee, we are able to work out an assistance schedule.  Students will be expected to respect the safety protocols for using clay and for maintaining appropriate measures to prevent the spread of Covid.

Important note:  Please be aware that this class will require a substantial time commitment to be successful. Students MUST use ALL the class time available to them and occasionally will need to attend tutorials in order to finish projects/assignments.

Swimming

What to Expect:  Whether you are a competition swimmer or just starting out, we have the ability to make you more efficient and faster in your strokes.

Things to know:  All athletes must complete Rank 1 paperwork, including a physical by a doctor.  We provide all gear except for a practice swimsuit and practice swim goggles (Speedo Vanquishers).  We encourage you to check your local sports store or the Texas Swim Shop on South Post Oak.

Important note:  We have a great team and would love to have you join us.  Feel free to reach out to Coach Gardner or Coach Farfan.
