Will Dempsey

My name is Will Dempsey, and I am privileged to be your eighth grade Language Arts teacher this year. This is my ninth year as a teacher and I am excited to be part of such a wonderful community of educators and learners here at Spring Oaks Middle School. My family and I moved here five years ago from Oakland, California where I taught middle school Language Arts for five years. Though I have experience teaching other grades, I choose to teach middle school, because I enjoy helping you navigate this uniquely awesome and sometimes confusing time in your life; you’re beginning to shape your identity/beliefs, learning to make good choices on your own, and establish some independence and accountability for yourselves. It is my hope that I can serve not only as your teacher, but as your mentor and advocate during this time, as well.

Your education is our job and I take our job very seriously. I don’t expect perfection, but I expect you to reach for it. During our time together in class, be sure to take initiative for your learning by asking questions, following directions, and completing all classwork. Your progress in our class will be measured by formal/informal class assessments, but you will also take the STAAR test for Language Arts as another measurement. This means that you will work hard, be challenged, and hopefully have some fun along the way. Though I care about how you perform on the STAAR test, I care more about you as a critical thinker, reader, writer, and learner. I don’t want you to simply succeed on a test; I want you to excel when you leave my classroom, as well.

Eighth grade is going to be a wonderful year, and I’m so glad you’re in my class. I have a lot of terrific things planned for this year, and I look forward to being part of a reciprocal and respectful community of learners with you all.

Your teacher,

Mr. Dempsey
