Spring Branch ISD

Betsy Young, Teacher: AP English Language and English III

After many years in marketing, mostly in the book publishing industry, I went back to graduate school to become a high-school English teacher. Within the month of May 2012, I graduated that program, got married, moved to Houston, and got a job in HISD. I have mostly taught AP English Language, but I have also taught English III, English I, and AP Literature.

This is my third year at Memorial, and I truly love it here. The students are so friendly, fun, and smart; the faculty and staff are inspiring and supportive; and the leadership is exceptional! I'm excited to have just become the Department Chair for the wonderful English department. I am also teaching AP Language and the new OnRamps Dual Enrollment Course: Rhetoric. Last fall, at the request of a rising senior and with her help, we launched Memorial's first chapter of the National English Honor Society.

Here is a bit more personal information if you are interested: I majored in English and Communications at Penn, and I got my M.A.T. at Rhode Island College. My husband is a history and bible teacher and a baseball and football coach; together, we are big fans of the New England Patriots. My biggest obsession is college gymnastics, and UCLA is "my" team, although we both like LSU as well. I also love to read, bake, go to the beach, and spend time with our 5 (!) young grandchildren. I have lived all over the country, and I still feel like a New Englander in many ways. But I love the warmth--of the climate and the people--in Texas.
