Commander Jerry W Coufal U.S. Navy (Ret.)

I graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in May and was commissioned an ensign in the Navy in September 1977.  I served on 3 different ships, 2 destroyer squadrons, 2 major staff commands and 2 Navy ROTC units at 3 different universities.  I was stationed in San Diego, California; Newport, Rhode Island; College Station, Texas; Yokosuka, Japan and Houston, Texas.  I taught naval science at Texas A&M (2.5 years) and Prairie View A&M and Rice Universities (4 years) in addition to earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree while stationed at Texas A&M.  I retired from the Navy in July 2001 after 24 years of service and started the Navy JROTC program at George Bush High School, then the newest high school in Fort Bend ISD.  I taught at George Bush for 12 years prior to accepting the position of Senior Naval Science Instructor here at The Guthrie Center.  The 2021-22 school year marks the beginning of my 9th year here at The Guthrie Center and the beginning of my 21st year instructing cadets in NJROTC.  I have been married for over 42 years to the love of my life and have 2 daughters, 2 son-in-laws and 7 grandchildren.  I enjoy working out, riding my bikes (Specialized 21-speed road bike & Harley Davidson Road King Classic), smoking briskets, playing World of Tanks on my XBOX and harrassing my grandchildren.  Follow our award-winning Navy JROTC unit on Twitter: @SB_GuthrieJROTC and on INSTAGRAM: guthriespringbranchnjrotc.  More info on the Navy JROTC program offered at the Guthrie Center and the NJROTC program in general is found below:
